Originally settled by Dutch farmers from New Amsterdam (now part of New York), Montville Township is situated some twenty-two miles northeast of Newark. Some 22,000 people live in the area and enjoy moderate temperatures, lush vegetation, and proximity to the Rockaway River.

During the American Revolution, General George Washington visited the area that is now known as Montville on his way from Morristown to the Hudson River, and the French General Rochambeau led more than 500 soldiers through the region to the final battle of the war in Yorktown Virginia.

For current residents of this charming, history-rich community, life is full of opportunities. The city of Montville has been ranked on Money Magazine’s list of Best Places to Live multiple times and offers an exciting arts scene, thriving businesses, an active real estate market, and great schools. However, like many other regions, it’s also home to a diverse community that isn’t always so welcome: pests.

Given its humid climate and moderate temperatures, Montville and the surrounding region offer a hospitable environment for a wide array of insects, from earwigs and cockroaches to carpenter ants and even bed bugs. Rodents, including mice, rats, and squirrels are also common, as are mosquitos and ticks, especially during the spring and summer months.

Destructive and Dangerous

While insects, spiders, rodents, and other creatures we think of as “pests” are all crucial to the ecology of Montville and New Jersey, they can also cause significant problems for residents. Stinging insects such as hornets, spiders, and ants can be dangerous to both children and adults.

Though mosquito and tick bites are less painful than a wasp’s sting, it’s important to note that these insects can transmit serious illnesses, such as West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and Lyme disease.

More than that, rodents, termites, carpenter ants and many other species can cause structural damage to homes and businesses. As most people know, termites eat wood because it provides the nutrients, moisture and cellulose they need to survive.

However, it’s a myth that carpenter ants also eat wood – they eat other insects but can still cause damage to your home’s wooden structures, since they remove wood to create tunnels and nests. And rodents are notorious for chewing up anything they can find, from insulation to cardboard. They use these materials to build nests in attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
