The arrival of warm nights, snow melts and rains, stimulates the emergence of adult mosquitoes. According to the CDC, illnesses from mosquito, tick, and flea bites have tripled in the U.S., with more than 640,000 cases reported during the 13 years from 2004 through 2016. So, now is the time to start thinking about how to protect your family.
What Can We Do to Help?
Dial Environmental offers Mosquito, Flea, and Tick programs, with both convention and organic treatments – the treatments are safe for use around children, pets and the environment, and won’t harm beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies or earthworms. A Study at New Mexico State University found that most mosquito repellents being marketed actually do a very poor job of repelling mosquitoes, except repellents that contain DEET or PMD (oil of eucalyptus). Out of the two DEET formulations, a 40% and a 98% product, the higher concentration was the most effective product tested. The oil of lemon eucalyptus that worked was a 30% concentration. Other botanical and herbal products repelled fewer or no mosquitoes and tend to be shorter-lived.
In addition, several mosquito bracelets and wrist bands, and a wearable sonic repeller, were all found to be ineffective in repelling mosquitoes. (The sonic repeller uses ultrasonic sound, and sound has never been found to be effective at repelling mosquitoes – it is a waste of your money!)
One wearable device fared well. It was a clip-on that has a nebulizer to vaporize its chemical repellent, Metoflurthrin. Repellent candles were also found to be ineffective. Best option?
