The last thing that you want is to find ants or other pests inside a container of food or a beverage container while you’re enjoying a Memorial Day BBQ. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can keep pests away from your BBQ so that you can concentrate on spending time with family and friends.

If you plan to eat inside the house after preparing food outside, make sure any cracks are sealed in the doors and windows. This will keep pests from entering the house while you have a large amount of food on the table and will also keep pests out of the home the rest of the year as well. Ask guests to close the door securely after they come inside the home, especially if they plan on going in and out on a regular basis while at the BBQ. An option is to get a screen to put over the door that can be pushed aside and that has a magnetic strip that will secure to the frame.

Keep Pests Away

Remove any standing water outside. Mosquitoes and other pests enjoy any kind of standing water so that they can lay their eggs and have something to drink in the summer. If you have a birdbath, drain the water before the BBQ so that pests don’t have anywhere to get water. Use citronella candles on the tables and ask that everyone wear some kind of insect repellent. There are bracelets that you can get that have insect repellent on them if you don’t feel comfortable asking guests to spray something on the skin. Use plastic plates, utensils, and cups when serving food and beverages. Aluminum cans are often good hiding places for insects like wasps, bees, and ants. Keep lids on containers as much as possible. You can usually get lids that fit on plastic cups as well to keep insects out of them. Dial Environmental can spray for insects that have taken up residence in your yard and treat for any future infestations that might occur.
